Weekly Update from Richmond

After an exciting first week in Richmond and a much-needed restful weekend back home with Christy and the kids, I’m back in Richmond this week working for the people of the 8th District.

On the first day of the 2012 session, the Speaker of the House of Delegates announced committee assignments for members. I am privileged to have been re-appointed to serve on the Courts of Justice and Transportation Committees. I am also very privileged to have been appointed to the Committee on Commerce and Labor.

These committee assignments will allow me to continue to advance an agenda focused on reforming government, promoting transparency and accountability and creating new opportunities for Virginians. The appointment to the Committee on Commerce and Labor will allow me a unique chance to focus on fostering private-sector job creation throughout our state and especially in the 8th District.

I have also been asked to serve as a Deputy Floor Whip. This responsibility will give me a chance to work very closely with other Delegates to advance a positive, pro-growth agenda.

This week, there has been a lot of talk in Richmond about the partisan divide separating Republicans and Democrats. In his State of the Commonwealth Address, Governor McDonnell called on both parties to put aside the talking points to work for the betterment of our Commonwealth. I agree.

I believe Richmond is very different than Washington. I look forward to working closely with Roanoke’s Delegate, Onzlee Ware, and other Democrats from across the state. I don’t believe we’re destined for partisan deadlock and I know Virginians are better than that.

This week, legislation will begin to make its way through Committees and eventually to the floor of the House of Delegates. Over 1,000 bills have already been filed and there are surely more to come. This will undoubtedly make for a very busy session.

As always, I welcome your input and comments. You can contact my office at (804) 698-1008 or email delghabeeb@house.virginia.gov.
